“Mirror Mirror”

“Mirror Mirror” was very interesting.  It’s about the perceptions we have on beauty.  The author touches on how we agree that beauty does come in other colors, but mostly what’s in season at the time.  When she mentions this it made me think how there has been an ongoing fad for Latinas.  I do remember a time when tan skin was not a beauty mark and curves were not so appealing.  All of a sudden Latinas were in and so were our naturally tanned skin and our curvy bodies.  So, who dictates what beauty is?

The author talks about how black is portrayed as beautiful, but not all kinds of blacks.  For example, you can be black, but just not too dark, you can have full lips, but not too full and your nose definitely cannot be too wide.  I guess the author is right when she refers to black beauty with a darker skin and fuller lips are not so accepted.  Off the top of my head when I think of black celebrities what comes to mind is Beyonce, Tyra Banks and Will Smith.  All three of them are light skinned and have full lips but not too full.

The author also talks about how we are so caught up in trying to look like we are “supposed” to that we are usually not happy with what we see in the mirror.  We’re always trying to get bigger breasts, smaller breasts, a prettier nose, fuller lips, thinner lips, straighter hair, lighter hair, lighter eyes.  We are always trying to conform to what is “beautiful.”

Maybe beautiful is YOU!

“Mirror Mirror on the wall, whose the fairest of them all?”
